PROS AND CONS

Veterinary  referral to massage is becoming more common and progressive due to its role in injury prevention and the proven research that indicates the improvement of exercise recovery and rehabilitation from injury. Documents have begun to compile important evidence into the potential benefits of equine massage for horses. Massage can also create a closer and stronger bond between humans and horses.  

"furthermore, consideration of the facial system clarifies how the various systems are physically interconnected. Mechanical pressure also may assist in increasing blood flow by increasing arteriolar pressure and increasing muscle temperature. Depending on the technique employed, this pressure can either increase or decrease neural excitability. In addition, changes in parasympathetic parameters such as heart rate and blood pressure, as well as hormonal effects can result in arelaxationresponse that may reduce stress and anxiety."  (Journal of equine veterinary science 2009) 

 With massage becoming more popular I believe that it is important for clients to be aware to the pros and cons of massage upon there horses

Cons of Massage

  • Open wounds and affected areas should not be massaged 
  • Massage may spread dermatologic conditions 
  • Should be routine so several bookings should be made 
  • Ailment will probably not be fixed overnight 
  • Time consuming
  • Horse should not be ridden after session
  • Spread infectious diseases such as strangles and ringworm
